May is Celiac Awareness Month and May 16th has been named Celiac Awareness Day. Look for people wearing green ribbons to support us. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the person has become intolerant to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and also oats unless they are labelled ‘pure.’ Gluten, or traces of gluten are found in many, many foods, but for someone with celiac disease even a small crumb of gluten can trigger their autoimmune system. Untreated celiac disease leads to a four fold increase in mortality rates for the persons concerned compared with the population in general. This disease affects 1 - 2% of the general population, or about 350,000 Canadians, although many are undiagnosed. The diagnosis leads to major life style adaptions for those affected and the Canadian Celiac Association seeks to support them.

Looking to Help those in need of Help
During a major Fire many good South Shore citizens react by donating items to help families to rebuild their life’s However because of the outpouring, donation centres quickly fill up and not all families request the goods or they may have gotten all they needed ... so Storage becomes a problem for groups as people give lots of items and in time they have too much...During the big fire a few years ago in St Lambert so much was given that the City had to rent a warehouse and after a few months then gave away the stuff to non-profit groups.
If you have items, you want to donate . I suggest you bring them to the Salvation Army or Mission Generation ...if there is a fire .they give the victims items and a $400 plus Coupon that they can exchange for things they may need. Even if your donated items are sold, the funds go into running their programs ...social support , food bank etc. .If a used item stores gives 75% of the income to charity then they do not charge sales taxes. Over at the Village du Value less than 5% of their profits go towards donations …so you pay taxes
